AliExpress to eBay dropshipping, start to finish

In short

You list an AliExpress product on eBay at a price that covers the product, its delivery, eBay’s fees and your margin. When it sells, you buy it on AliExpress with the buyer’s address and give eBay the tracking number. The work is in the parts that repeat: keeping price and stock in step with the supplier, and handling delivery times and returns.

The idea fits in one sentence. The business is everything the sentence leaves out: a price that is still right next week, stock that is still there, and a parcel the buyer can watch arrive.

This is the whole process in the order you meet it, with a link to the detailed guide for each step.

Before you start: the policy and your account

eBay allows dropshipping from a wholesale supplier and does not allow buying from another marketplace that ships to your buyer. Read the policy and decide how you will source before listing anything.

A new eBay account also has a monthly selling limit, in items and in value. It is small at first and grows with sales and feedback, so plan to start with a short list of products rather than hundreds.

Step 1: choose products that already sell

The reliable signal is not that a product looks good. It is that the same product is already selling on eBay, from few enough sellers, at a price that leaves a margin after everything.

Check four things per product: units sold on eBay recently, how many sellers list the same item, the supplier’s rating and order count, and delivery time to your buyer’s country.

Step 2: work out the real price

The cost is the AliExpress price plus delivery to the buyer’s country. Delivery is quoted per variation and can change with the order value.

On top of the cost come eBay’s final value fee, the per-order fee, any ad fee if you promote the listing, and currency conversion if you sell outside US dollars. Your margin is what is left after all of them.

Part of the priceWhere it comes from
Product costThe variation’s price on AliExpress, on your own account
DeliveryAliExpress’s quote to the buyer’s country
eBay final value feeA percentage of the total the buyer pays, by category
Promoted Listings feeYour ad rate, only on sales that came through the ad
Your marginWhat you add: a percentage, a fixed sum, or both

Step 3: build the listing

  • Title: rewritten for eBay search, within 80 characters, most important words first
  • Photos: at least 500 pixels on the longest side, hosted by eBay
  • Variations: every size and colour as one listing, each matched to a value eBay accepts
  • Item specifics: every required field filled, and the recommended ones buyers filter by
  • Business policies: payment, postage and returns chosen, with a handling time you can keep

Step 4: keep it right after it is live

AliExpress sellers change prices and run out of stock without telling anyone. A listing that does not follow sells at a loss or sells something that cannot be sent, and a cancelled sale counts against your account.

Check every live listing against its source at least daily. Raise the eBay price when the cost rises, and set the quantity to zero the moment the supplier runs out.

Step 5: order, track, and deliver

When an item sells, buy the same variation on AliExpress with the buyer’s name and address, exactly as eBay gives them. A wrong state or city is the commonest reason AliExpress refuses an order.

When the supplier ships, give eBay the tracking number before your handling time runs out. Many AliExpress tracking numbers belong to carriers eBay does not follow, which matters in an “item not received” case.

Step 6: returns and cases

The buyer deals with you, not with AliExpress. You refund or replace under your own returns policy and eBay’s money back guarantee, then take the matter up with the supplier separately.

Price for it. A share of orders will arrive late, damaged or not at all, and a margin with no room for that is not a margin.

Questions

How much money do I need to start?
Enough to buy your first orders before eBay pays you, plus any subscription you use. eBay may hold a new seller’s payouts for a time, so expect to pay the supplier before you receive the buyer’s money.
How long does AliExpress delivery take to the US or UK?
It depends on the seller’s warehouse and the delivery method. Items sent from a warehouse in the buyer’s country arrive in days; items sent from China usually take one to three weeks. Each product page quotes its own estimate per destination.
Do I need an AliExpress business account?
No. An ordinary account can place orders. Prices, coupons and delivery quotes differ between accounts, so work out your prices on the account you will actually buy with.
Can the whole thing be automated?
Importing, pricing, stock and price updates, placing the order and passing the tracking to eBay can all be done by software. Choosing products, answering buyers and deciding on returns still need a person.
What is a realistic margin?
It varies by product and competition, and nobody can promise one. Work it out per product from the real cost, delivery and fees rather than aiming at a figure from an advert.
