Amazon to eBay dropshipping: how it works, and the risks
In short
Sellers list a product from Amazon on eBay at a higher price and, when it sells, order it on Amazon to the buyer’s address. It is fast because Amazon delivers in days, but eBay’s policy does not allow buying from another retailer that ships to your customer, and Amazon’s Prime terms do not allow using Prime to ship to your own customers. The other difficulties are branded goods, Amazon packaging, and tracking numbers eBay cannot follow.
Amazon to eBay is attractive for one reason: delivery. A parcel that arrives in two days produces far fewer complaints than one that takes three weeks.
It also carries more rules than any other way of sourcing. This is how it works, what both marketplaces say, and what goes wrong.
How it works
- Find a product on Amazon that sells on eBay for more than Amazon’s price plus eBay’s fees
- List it on eBay with your own title, the product’s photos and its variations
- When it sells, order it on Amazon as a gift to the buyer’s address
- Give eBay the tracking number when Amazon dispatches it
- Watch Amazon’s price and stock, which move several times a day
What the rules say
eBay’s dropshipping policy says that listing an item and then purchasing it from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed. Amazon is a retailer and a marketplace.
Amazon’s terms for Prime say members may not use Prime to buy products for resale or to ship to their own customers. Amazon can and does close accounts it believes are used this way.
Sellers who do this are taking a risk with two accounts, knowingly. Nothing in any tool changes that.
The practical problems
| Problem | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Amazon packaging | The buyer receives an Amazon box with a gift receipt, and may say so in feedback or open a case |
| TBA tracking numbers | Amazon’s own delivery service uses numbers eBay does not follow, so eBay cannot see the parcel move |
| Prices that move hourly | A listing checked once a day can sell at a loss between checks |
| Branded goods | Most Amazon products are real brands, some of which report listings on eBay |
| Returns | The buyer returns to you; you then have to return to Amazon within its own window |
| Sales tax and Prime | What you pay at checkout depends on the delivery address and your membership |
Prime, the buy box, and what the price really is
One Amazon product page can have many sellers behind it. The price shown is the offer in the “buy box”, and it changes as sellers compete. The offer you want is one sold or dispatched by Amazon, because it ships fastest and returns most easily.
Some prices appear only in the basket, where the manufacturer does not allow them to be shown. A cost worked out from the page alone will be wrong for those.
Why Amazon has to be read in your own browser
Amazon offers no API that gives an ordinary seller another retailer’s prices and stock, and it blocks servers that read its pages. So tools that support Amazon read it through a browser extension, on your computer, signed in as you.
The consequence is that price and stock are checked while your browser is open. A listing is only as fresh as the last time the extension read its page.
If you go ahead
- Prefer products sold or dispatched by Amazon, in stock, with fast delivery to the buyer’s country
- Check that you may sell the brand on eBay before listing it
- Keep your handling time honest: Amazon’s dispatch estimate, not zero days
- Convert or replace tracking numbers eBay cannot follow
- Leave room in the price for returns you will pay for twice
Questions
- Is Amazon to eBay dropshipping allowed?
- Not under eBay’s dropshipping policy, which does not allow buying from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer. Amazon’s Prime terms also prohibit using Prime to ship to your customers.
- Can I use Amazon Prime for orders?
- Amazon’s terms say Prime may not be used to purchase products for resale or to ship to your customers. Accounts used this way can be closed, with orders in progress cancelled.
- What is a TBA tracking number?
- It is a number from Amazon Logistics, Amazon’s own delivery service. eBay does not follow it as a carrier, so it can only be entered as “Other”, where it never shows a scan.
- How often should Amazon prices be checked?
- As often as you can. Amazon’s prices and stock change many times a day, far faster than AliExpress’s, so a longer gap between checks means more sales at the wrong price.
