eBay variation listings for size and colour
A variation listing is one page where the buyer picks size and colour. It collects all the sales history, all the reviews and all the search weight in one place instead of spreading them across twenty listings.
eBay is strict about how they are built, and the rules are not obvious until one is refused.
Why one listing beats twenty
- Sales and feedback accumulate on one listing instead of being split
- A buyer who wanted a different size stays on your page rather than leaving
- One listing is one thing to edit when the supplier changes the price
- Promoted Listings spend concentrates rather than competing with itself
The rules that decide whether it publishes
- Every variation needs its own SKU, price and quantity
- Option names have to be ones eBay recognises for the category — Size, Colour, Size Type
- Every value has to be in eBay’s list for that category; an unknown value fails the whole listing
- A photo can be attached to one option only, normally colour
- Variations cannot be removed once a listing has sales against them — they are set to zero instead
The mistake that fails most variation listings
Two AliExpress options that mean the same thing — "Color" and "Colour", or a colour named both "Black" and "black " with a trailing space — arrive as separate options. eBay sees two option names where there should be one and refuses.
The same happens with sizes typed inconsistently across variations. The tidying has to happen before eBay is asked, not after it complains.
Quantities worth publishing
A supplier saying 6,000 available does not mean you should publish 6,000. A cap keeps a listing honest and stops a run you cannot fulfil.
Whatever you choose, it has to follow the supplier afterwards. A variation that has sold out upstream has to reach zero on eBay before somebody buys it.
Questions
- Why does eBay say my variations are invalid?
- Almost always an option value it does not accept for that category, or the same option arriving under two names. Check the exact spelling against eBay’s list for the category before anything else.
- Can I add a size later?
- Yes. Adding is allowed at any time. Removing one that has sales is not — set its quantity to zero instead.
- Should every variation have its own photo?
- Attach photos to colour, not to size. eBay allows photos on one option, and a buyer choosing a size does not need a different picture.
