eBay error 25001: a system error has occurred

A system error has occurred

You press publish and eBay answers with error 25001 and the words "A system error has occurred". Nothing about your listing is named, which is what makes it maddening.

In most cases the listing is fine and eBay is not.

What it actually means

25001 is eBay’s catch-all for a failure on its own side. It is not a validation error: it does not mean a field is wrong, missing or invalid.

It appears most often when several inventory items or offers are sent close together, which is exactly what publishing a listing with many variations does.

What to do, in order

  • Wait a minute and press publish again. A large share of these succeed on the second attempt with nothing changed.
  • If it fails again, try once more after a few minutes rather than immediately.
  • If it fails three times over several minutes, treat it as real and check the listing: category set, required item specifics filled, at least one variation with a price and quantity, and photos that clear eBay’s minimum.
  • Check eBay’s own status page before spending an afternoon on it.

Why sending slower fixes it

A listing with forty variations is forty inventory items plus offers. Sent all at once, eBay sometimes refuses part way through with 25001.

Sending a few at a time, and retrying the ones that fail after a short pause, turns a failed publish into a slower successful one. eBay Lister does this: it retries a 25001 after one second, then two, then four, and limits how many go at once.

When it is not temporary

If the same listing fails repeatedly while others publish, something about that listing is provoking it. The usual culprits are a variation with no price, an option value eBay does not recognise, or a photo it will not accept — all of which normally produce clearer errors, but not always.

Questions

Is error 25001 my fault?
Usually not. It is eBay’s general-purpose internal failure, and retrying often succeeds with nothing changed.
How many times should I retry?
Three attempts spread over a few minutes. Beyond that, stop and look at the listing itself.
Does it mean part of my listing was created?
It can. Republishing is safe: eBay replaces an inventory item or offer that already exists rather than duplicating it.
