eBay says your variations are invalid

Invalid multi-variation listing

A variation listing fails and eBay says the variations are invalid, without saying which one. With forty of them, that is not much to go on.

There are four causes, and they can be checked in a couple of minutes.

1. The same option arriving twice under different names

"Color" and "Colour" are two options to eBay. So are "Size" and "size ", with a trailing space. Supplier data carries both more often than you would think, and eBay refuses a listing that varies by what it sees as two separate things.

2. A value eBay does not recognise

One unrecognised size among forty fails the whole listing, not just that variation. See the guide on rejected item specifics for the translation.

3. A variation with no price or no quantity

Every variation needs both. A supplier variation that is sold out often arrives with no price at all, and that alone is enough.

4. Photos on the wrong option

eBay allows variation photos on one option only, normally colour. Photos attached to size, or to two options at once, are refused.

Finding which one it is

  • Sort your variations by option name and look for two that differ only in spelling or spacing
  • Check every value against eBay’s list for the category
  • Look for any variation with an empty price or quantity
  • Confirm photos are attached to colour and nothing else

Questions

Can I publish some variations and not others?
Yes. Disabling the ones that will not validate lets the rest go live, and they can be added afterwards.
Why does removing a variation fail?
A variation with sales against it cannot be removed. Set its quantity to zero instead.
Does the order of variations matter?
No, but consistent option names do. Every variation must use exactly the same option names.
