eBay selling limits for new sellers, and how to raise them
In short
Every eBay account has a monthly limit on how much it can list, counted in items and in total value. Active and sold listings both count. eBay reviews the limit each month and raises it automatically on sales and feedback, and you can request an increase from Seller Hub. New sellers should list fewer, better products rather than fill the limit.
A new account can list very little. That surprises sellers who arrive with a plan for five hundred products.
The limit is not a penalty, and it moves. This is how it is counted and what makes it grow.
What the limit is
eBay sets a monthly limit on each account, expressed both as a number of items and as a total value. You can see yours in Seller Hub, on the Overview tab, under Monthly limits.
There can also be category limits, which apply mainly when you are new to a category. Most are removed automatically once you have a track record there.
What counts toward it
- Every active listing, by its quantity and price
- Everything you have sold in the month
- Good ’Til Cancelled listings, which stop renewing once you reach the limit
- Each variation’s quantity: ten sizes with five of each is fifty items
Variations are where the limit disappears fastest. A listing with many sizes and a generous quantity on each can use a new account’s whole allowance alone.
How eBay raises it
eBay reviews each account monthly and adjusts the limit on its own, based on your sales and the feedback buyers leave. Selling and delivering well is the main way a limit grows.
You can also ask. When you are close to the limit eBay shows a “Request a limit increase” option, and it may ask you for contact or business details. Sellers with an older, established account can sometimes link the two.
Planning a catalogue around a small limit
- Start with a short list of products that already sell, rather than as many as will fit
- Set the quantity per variation low: one or two is enough to make a sale
- End listings that have not sold after a few weeks to free the allowance
- Do not list in the wrong category to get around a category limit: eBay treats that as search manipulation
What slows a limit down
Cancelled orders, late shipments and unresolved cases all weigh against an account at the monthly review. A new seller who lists more than they can supply reliably is working against their own limit.
Questions
- What is the selling limit for a new eBay seller?
- eBay sets it per account and does not publish one figure for everyone. Your own limit, in items and in value, is shown in Seller Hub under Monthly limits.
- How do I increase my eBay selling limit?
- Sell and deliver well, since eBay reviews limits every month and raises them automatically. You can also use “Request a limit increase” in Seller Hub when you are near the limit.
- Do sold items count toward the limit?
- Yes. Active listings and items sold in the month both count, in number and in value.
- What happens when I reach the limit?
- You cannot list more until the month renews or the limit rises. Listings over the limit may be ended, and Good ’Til Cancelled listings stop renewing.
